There are age minimums for most of them, however, so we went down to the Water Conservation Center and did the<b>&nbsp;Xeriscape Garden- Youth Plant Adaptations &amp; Water Conservation Program Tour.</b> There are several activities to do on this tour- we started outside in the garden.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MB0BqU4xVMs/U6pk5hb25YI/AAAAAAAAOP0/90Jec6lnu88/s1600/watertour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MB0BqU4xVMs/U6pk5hb25YI/AAAAAAAAOP0/90Jec6lnu88/s1600/watertour.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div><div>When you get there, go ahead and check in at the office. They will give you booklets to use throughout your visit, pencils, clipboards, laminated information cards, and even magnifying glasses. Then head out to the garden and read the first clue on your scavenger hunt. The laminated card will help you figure out which plant to find. Some of plants were a little tricky but I think we got them all right in the end. I liked how it explained how each different plant conserved water. This tour is perfect on a nice day. You can walk around for a while, take lots of pictures, and just have fun. There is even a mini waterfall feature. Its not a huge space but its nice.<br /><a name='more'></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8l6p57eWSU/U6pkoTA_SII/AAAAAAAAOPI/pKnRS76O5I4/s1600/watergardenhunt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8l6p57eWSU/U6pkoTA_SII/AAAAAAAAOPI/pKnRS76O5I4/s1600/watergardenhunt.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div><div>After head inside and try another scavenger hunt. There is a section that looks like the inside of a house. That's where you will find your next scavenger hunt. This one was more tricky but I think its because they have made some changes since it started. There is still fun to be had and its a great way to help your kids understand why 15 minute showers aren't okay.&nbsp;</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DP2K6WyOzJM/U6pkyYvqUHI/AAAAAAAAOPg/JHaKEahGb4w/s1600/waterindoor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DP2K6WyOzJM/U6pkyYvqUHI/AAAAAAAAOPg/JHaKEahGb4w/s1600/waterindoor.jpg" height="320" width="211" /></a></div><div>Inside you can also find books to read that even the littlest ones will enjoy as well as a Water System toy (really a marble run). They have 2 models that you can try to replicate and labels on the pieces to understand the parts in a water system. Really, the kids are just going to have fun with it.<br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BFon-kCNPu4/U6pkz02McNI/AAAAAAAAOPs/-VyuYJEz318/s1600/watersinks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BFon-kCNPu4/U6pkz02McNI/AAAAAAAAOPs/-VyuYJEz318/s1600/watersinks.jpg" height="320" width="231" /></a></div><div><b>What I Liked Most:</b> The view and the flowers. It is amazing mostly because it will change your definition of library. We went over for a sneak peak this week and are counting down the minutes to the Grand Opening this <a href="http://ppld.org/whats-new/library-21c-grand-opening-saturday-june-21" target="_blank">Saturday, June 21 at 9:30 am. </a>Its going to be great!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oauv7zCJHsA/U6OP5L6mRwI/AAAAAAAAN2w/MUU2oeDZ0pE/s1600/Libraryreview.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Library 21c in Colorado Springs- makes you rethink how you define a library" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oauv7zCJHsA/U6OP5L6mRwI/AAAAAAAAN2w/MUU2oeDZ0pE/s1600/Libraryreview.jpg" height="248" title="Library 21c Review" width="400" /></a></div><br />What's so amazing you ask? First just the space! The kids section is about the same size of the old library. There are two floors, a cafe, copy center, and so much more. Let me take you on a photo tour:<br /><br />Depending on where you park will determine which level you enter on. For our photo tour today, we're parking on the lower level to enter on the main floor.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1qrC7k8iNrQ/U6OP83lh_cI/AAAAAAAAN28/Uq2ZIjUB1ZU/s1600/libraryholds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Holds at Library 21c" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1qrC7k8iNrQ/U6OP83lh_cI/AAAAAAAAN28/Uq2ZIjUB1ZU/s1600/libraryholds.jpg" height="244" title="Library 21c" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">First thing you will see when you walk in are these fast check out scanners and the Holds Pick Up area. Perfect for an easy in easy out. I love holds at the library. It is not uncommon for me to put a ton of books on hold during the summer so I can help my kids learn all summer long. Since the books are at several different locations, I love the convenience of putting them on hold and picking them up at one place. This is also where you will return your books. Past this area behind the Pick Up area is a Teen Zone which includes computers, books, comfy seats, and two break out rooms if you need to have a study session or something. Its neat.&nbsp;</div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OY8HxKGFtNE/U6OP5-AH6eI/AAAAAAAAN20/UGLoKO05fjA/s1600/libraryenter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Great space at Library 21c" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OY8HxKGFtNE/U6OP5-AH6eI/AAAAAAAAN20/UGLoKO05fjA/s1600/libraryenter.jpg" height="313" title="Library 21c" width="400" /></a></div>&nbsp;<span style="text-align: center;">Next you walk into this amazing space. I love all the windows. Here you can find the Hot Items shelved near the windows and choose your next destination. There is a little Friends of the Library Bookstore and an eHelp Cyber Clinic. Don't know how to use your new tablet- come here and they will teach you. Don't know which tablet to buy? They will have some for you to look at and play around with so you can see which best fits your needs. Seriously, remember this resource. There are couches and seating areas throughout this main space and even a cafe- <a href="http://www.herstorycafe.com/" target="_blank">Her Story Cafe</a>. You can literally spend all day here. You will also find some restrooms right next to the cafe (remember this one parents-its the closet one to the Children's Section).</span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9DD9S27ozoU/U6OQEQ0u9QI/AAAAAAAAN3U/phEg2o5uCXQ/s1600/librarykids.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Children's Section at Library 21c" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9DD9S27ozoU/U6OQEQ0u9QI/AAAAAAAAN3U/phEg2o5uCXQ/s1600/librarykids.jpg" height="263" title="Library 21c" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you have kids you'll want to head back to the Children's Section (they have giant glass panels with the word KIDS on it so its hard to miss). I love having the kids area closed in. As a parent I teach my kids to be quiet in libraries. Some of my children think they are being quiet but its the shout whisper. Gotta love it. The walls surrounding the children's section definitely puts me at ease. I like how in this library there is a separate room for the crafts or performances in the children's section too. The other cool thing about the Children's Section is the Family Place Library. Its a great place to take your family, read books together, play a little, learn more about the resources in the community, and meet new friends. I'm still friends with someone I met at the library when we just moved here. After all, you know you have at least something in common- you both like the library! This is a space I see myself doing research or blogging while my kids play and read books. Its really nice. In the future you will some family workshops here as well. Its a great community resource.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5odUGWYc3HM/U6OQDT8HRlI/AAAAAAAAN3M/NPFJm_pl7Ho/s1600/librarykidcomputer.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="Library 21c Colorado Springs" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5odUGWYc3HM/U6OQDT8HRlI/AAAAAAAAN3M/NPFJm_pl7Ho/s1600/librarykidcomputer.jpg" height="214" title="Library 21c" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">&nbsp; The Kids' Computer Lab is great. I really appreciate the separate desk areas here as opposed to the one long table. The keyboards are great and the computers have great educational kid games. There are so many fun toys throughout this library too. Get ready to stay a while. My kids are begging to go back- like I said, we are counting down the minutes to when we get to go back.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7NkivcassbA/U6Q-4OLbalI/AAAAAAAAN5g/r77PMlwhR1I/s1600/librarycurtain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7NkivcassbA/U6Q-4OLbalI/AAAAAAAAN5g/r77PMlwhR1I/s1600/librarycurtain.jpg" height="253" width="320" /></a></div>Across from the Children's Section is the Main Library Collection. It has tons of books and nice seating areas. A neat thing you will find throughout this library is the sectioned off parts of the library. They have chain curtains hanging down that kind of section off corners of the library for a bit more privacy. I really like it. There is also a big desk area here where you can plug your lap top in. Another neat feature- you can<a href="https://www.printeron.net/system/printspot/interface/select_file.jsp?url=ppld/21stcenturylibrary&amp;protocolSwitched=true" target="_blank">&nbsp;print wirelessly</a>. You can send your documents to the printers from your own computer wherever you are in the library. Definitely an improvement over the old system.<br /><br />I'm in love with all the space at this library. There are 3 stairwells that will take you to the next level (and 1 elevator). We are going to go up the stairwell in between the Children's Section and the main Library Collection on our photo tour here. This is where it gets really cool and blows your mind when it comes to library definitions.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZNi_QwOuIw/U6Q_TzSA2oI/AAAAAAAAN5o/7827eLdNB_s/s1600/libraryfilm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZNi_QwOuIw/U6Q_TzSA2oI/AAAAAAAAN5o/7827eLdNB_s/s1600/libraryfilm.jpg" height="233" width="320" /></a></div><br />On the east side you will find the Audio Video Studio. This is where the library will be shooting their programs for their TV station now- yes, they have a <a href="http://vimeo.com/ppldtv/" target="_blank">TV station</a>. And guess what? You can reserve this space as well. You can even check out some equipment to go make your own film outdoors. Next to this space is the Venue&nbsp;@21c. The Venue holds up to 400 people and can be easily split into smaller rooms. This a great place for performances, community meetings, business workshops, and more. The really neat part is whats under the floors though. The library received a donation to put <a href="http://ppld.org/whats-new/donation-will-help-hearing-aid-users-library-21c" target="_blank">inductive loop</a> under the floors. Those with hearing aids will hear directly what is coming out of the sound system eliminating background noise (which sometimes is louder than the speakers). You can find other nice features like this throughout the library as well.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nwK8sD-uZiQ/U6Q_UW6GBUI/AAAAAAAAN5w/GFxKQaZyvxU/s1600/libraryvenue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nwK8sD-uZiQ/U6Q_UW6GBUI/AAAAAAAAN5w/GFxKQaZyvxU/s1600/libraryvenue.jpg" height="227" width="400" /></a></div><br />On the west side you will find my new&nbsp;obsession: the Make rooms!. You have to go through <a href="http://www.ppld.org/whats-new/how-use-makerspaces-library-21c" target="_blank">training</a> before being able to use any of the machines but it will be worth it! Make is kind of like the clean creative room- no power tools but you will find sewing machines, paper cutting tools, and even a vinyl machine. You don't need to reserve this room but you do have to check in and make sure there are't classes at that time.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EYjnZ18UB9M/U6RAxNpd4dI/AAAAAAAAN58/rzND-nxfGUk/s1600/librarymake2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EYjnZ18UB9M/U6RAxNpd4dI/AAAAAAAAN58/rzND-nxfGUk/s1600/librarymake2.jpg" height="201" width="320" /></a></div>Make II is the messy creative space- think power tools here. They have &nbsp;an awesome 3D printer here, a woodworking machine and more. I'm completely amazed by this space. Guess who will be in one of the first safety training classes? Me. Don't worry, I'll tell you more about these spaces in the future as I become more familiar with them. My husband is determined to use the 3D printer- no idea what for but he really wants to use it. I can't blame him.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LhdxFTbYouY/U6RC4BL44nI/AAAAAAAAN6I/yXEjqtZ8r7o/s1600/libraryedit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LhdxFTbYouY/U6RC4BL44nI/AAAAAAAAN6I/yXEjqtZ8r7o/s1600/libraryedit.jpg" height="199" width="320" /></a></div>In between the two Make rooms you will also find an Editing Bay. Its a great little space with very useful tools.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cSQuKzQyUGk/U6RHD8w2V_I/AAAAAAAAN6k/8IE8RTHjff4/s1600/librarytag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cSQuKzQyUGk/U6RHD8w2V_I/AAAAAAAAN6k/8IE8RTHjff4/s1600/librarytag.jpg" height="217" width="320" /></a></div><br />The west side also has two gaming areas- one for Teens and one for Adults. You can also find computers with programming software which is pretty neat. I love that teens can come and just hang out at the library. Don't worry there are not any M rated games. You can only play the games that are provided too.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rw5zLpwgCbw/U6RHDFdgM3I/AAAAAAAAN6g/n1CY-HB6xmc/s1600/library21c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rw5zLpwgCbw/U6RHDFdgM3I/AAAAAAAAN6g/n1CY-HB6xmc/s1600/library21c.jpg" height="222" width="320" /></a></div><br />Next you come to the atrium. There is a help desk nearby and even a Copy and Print Center here- <a href="http://www.ricoh-usa.com/" target="_blank">Ricoh</a>. The space on the south side of the atrium is pretty great too. You can use those cool see through white boards, find a private work area, use the huge adult computer lab, and even reserve some work space if you work at home (hoteling). There are several private rooms to reserve and a great space for office meetings (even has a balcony). The business meeting spaces even have mondo pads which essentially are giant tablets. One of the rooms I noticed had a whole wall that was a white board. There are Business Librarians to help patrons too. They can train you to use the technology and utilize business information.<br /><br />I can see myself using every single space of this library. There is just so much.<a href="http://ppld.org/21stCenturyLibrary" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Library 21c</a> shifts the way I think about a library. Its also what I've been looking for. I want a place that I use a vinyl machine, do some video editing, work in a quiet space, having a meeting, and go home with a new book to read or movie to watch. I will definitely be spending lots of time here in the future. The neat thing is Pikes Peak District is also upgrading several other libraries starting with East and Penrose so you won't need to come to this one if its too far away. If you don't know her yet, she shares great blogging info, recipes, Pinterest fun, and my favorite right now is her Mommy Reality Challenges. Jen has teamed up with some of her blogging friends to bring these challenges every week. It is highly amusing and comforting to see all the pictures each week! Here's a snapshot from last week. Its fun to get those extra special ice cream treats like the baseball glove with the gum (remember those?). However, the ice cream truck always comes to our neighborhood right at bed time. Seriously- Why not the middle of the day? Then there is the cost- its not cheap to buy from the ice cream truck anymore. You can buy a whole summer's worth of ice cream for the same price you would spend on 7 treats at the ice cream truck.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O1bHSyowRRk/U6Dv4T54KAI/AAAAAAAANxs/e1MGjeNdXvo/s1600/icecreamtrucktitle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O1bHSyowRRk/U6Dv4T54KAI/AAAAAAAANxs/e1MGjeNdXvo/s1600/icecreamtrucktitle.jpg" height="312" width="400" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So I went out and bought a ton of popsicles and ice cream and cut out all the fronts of the boxes. I taped each box front together so it would make one big sign. Then I attached the sign to a rolled down window in our car, turned some music on, and yelled, "Ice Cream Truck" to my kids. They LOVED it! We do Ice Cream Truck once a week now. &nbsp; Its a blast.&nbsp;</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iy9GFBkYK5k/U5--XEIKD2I/AAAAAAAANW8/zOpMIv9QnMA/s1600/icecreamtruckw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iy9GFBkYK5k/U5--XEIKD2I/AAAAAAAANW8/zOpMIv9QnMA/s1600/icecreamtruckw.jpg" height="243" width="320" /></a></div><br /><a name='more'></a>Why the prices? That's the best part- my kids have to earn their ice cream. Throughout the week I award them with money for the truck based on how they do their chores: Did they complain a lot? Did they go above and beyond? Did they have to go back and do it over and over? Did they simply go and do their job as asked? If they do an amazing job- they get 3 pieces of money. An okay job equals 2, and a not great but still passable job is 1 piece of money. By the end of the week they can have up to 18 pieces of money (I priced some worth more than that though so they also have to learn the art of saving). We made the lowest 6 pieces of money though so they at least got some kind of award if they did their chores everyday. I find boys tend to be motivated by food. Just seems to be a fact of life (Ever heard the saying, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach"?) My boys do their jobs really well- better than their older sisters.&nbsp;</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iiTTGOrqsgk/U6DOHjCSDGI/AAAAAAAANqo/fBNqfOFd6eg/s1600/icecreamready.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iiTTGOrqsgk/U6DOHjCSDGI/AAAAAAAANqo/fBNqfOFd6eg/s1600/icecreamready.jpg" height="320" width="245" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_393lzU05qY/U6DOGbbru5I/AAAAAAAANqg/cgAgrtKAIj4/s1600/icecreambuy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_393lzU05qY/U6DOGbbru5I/AAAAAAAANqg/cgAgrtKAIj4/s1600/icecreambuy.jpg" height="320" width="246" /></a></div><br /><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eHR311IPDL8/U5--SxMf6aI/AAAAAAAANWs/p8RMnAqVON8/s1600/icecreamtruckeat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eHR311IPDL8/U5--SxMf6aI/AAAAAAAANWs/p8RMnAqVON8/s1600/icecreamtruckeat.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div><br />Sometimes I slip in some homemade popsicles and ice cream too- its even better actually. Once it starts to thicken up a little, start pouring in the chocolate crumbs then the gummies.&nbsp;</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;5. When it gets to a nice thick consistency, its done! You could also just mix it in a bowl and put in the freezer. It won"t be as creamy but it'll still be good. I thought about mixing in some chocolate pudding to make it more Mud Pie like but I thought that would be too much.</div></div><div><br /></div>I love homemade versions of ice cream treats because you can make it healthier and its just more fun. My all time favorite is Mixed Berry Sorbet. All you need is pureed berries, a little lemon juice, and sugar water (or honey water). Its so good and the color is beautiful.<br /><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Looking for more great recipes? I still remember being amazed by it all- I mean you are this close to being on TV! How funny that it makes us all excited when you <i>could</i> be on TV. On our recent tour to <a href="http://www.krdo.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">KRDO News Channel 13</a> I was amazed at how much has changed through the years. I know I shouldn't be- we have come a long way; I just never thought about it in those terms. There are no camera men, no directors/producers on the floor. In fact you really only need 1 person on the floor for the weather update. How crazy is that? All in all for a 2 1/2 hour morning show it only takes 10 people.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BfPJv4QeSeM/U5qRukty8sI/AAAAAAAANHo/f0Xa3wn2oUo/s1600/krdonewstour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Behind the Scenes at KRDO News Channel 13" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BfPJv4QeSeM/U5qRukty8sI/AAAAAAAANHo/f0Xa3wn2oUo/s1600/krdonewstour.jpg" height="310" title="KRDO News Channel 13 Tour" width="400" /></a></div><br />We started the tour examining the set then watching a brief live segment. Meteorologist, Marty Venticinque, was our tour guide. <br /><a name='more'></a>He did a great job of showing us around, answering all our questions (from the kids and adults), and explaining things to us. Its fun to see what the set really looks like. The teleprompters, for some reason, always fascinate me. Then we went upstairs to see the control room where you can control the volume, screen shots, cameras, etc. This room is much smaller than it used to be because you don't need tubs and tubs of VHS tapes to pop in. Everything is digital. And guess what time the producer arrives at work? 3-3:30 am. The good news? No traffic. At the end of our tour we all tried out the green screen. Marty even gave us green cloth so we could disappear. I have very good memories of my Dad and love helping my kids celebrate theirs. One way we like to show him we care is by doing something that he likes so we can create a memory together (I mean that is why we are celebrating Father's Day right?). Here are 5 tours you can take Dad on for Father's Day:<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z5c2wOWZOKc/U5fqsC692MI/AAAAAAAAM18/ZNDmguAd70Y/s1600/dadtours.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-z5c2wOWZOKc/U5fqsC692MI/AAAAAAAAM18/ZNDmguAd70Y/s1600/dadtours.png" height="200" width="199" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br /><br /><ol><li><a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/06/el-pomar-carriage-museum.html" target="_blank">El Pomar Carriage Museum-</a> Don't let the name fool you; it has tons of race cars from the Pikes Peak Hill Climb too. Its a fun place to check out cars, carriages, and history. Their new addition should be opening soon too. Afterwords go for a walk together around the lake at the Broadmoor or go for lunch.&nbsp;<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RqKYxLcvAEg/U5foy5_y0MI/AAAAAAAAM1o/OgXiIhmOKdI/s1600/OTCglobe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RqKYxLcvAEg/U5foy5_y0MI/AAAAAAAAM1o/OgXiIhmOKdI/s1600/OTCglobe.jpg" height="155" width="320" /></a></div><a name='more'></a><br /> </li><li>Enjoy the world of sports at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/07/olympic-training-center-otc-tour.html" target="_blank">Olympic Train Center (OTC)</a>- Watch some of the best athletes in the world train. I use them but only when its that last push and we really need it. I've shared with you previously <a href="http://www.costours.com/2014/04/how-to-stop-question-are-we-there-yet.html" target="_blank">10 Ways to Avoid the Dreaded Question</a>. Here's another idea to add to your toolbox.<br /><h3 style="text-align: center;">Finish the Scenes Notebooks<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7Poor71wfas/U4_v6wRa76I/AAAAAAAAMNc/6e0SDwwtB_M/s1600/FinishtheScene.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7Poor71wfas/U4_v6wRa76I/AAAAAAAAMNc/6e0SDwwtB_M/s1600/FinishtheScene.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div></h3>Grab an empty notebook (or paper in a binder) and start drawing parts of pictures. Don't finish them- just draw enough to spark the imagination. I made some for my kids a few Christmases back and its still a hit. Sometimes I leave directions to help encourage more thought and sometimes I'll just draw a little. Keep these notebooks in the car or for a long road trip and you have some great quiet but not boring time.<br /><a name='more'></a><br />Don't know what to draw? Buy some die-cuts or stickers at the Hobby Lobby and put them in. I've made a few free printables for you to grab or see another <a href="http://www.cknscratch.com/chickenscratchnsniff/2011/12/activity-notebooks.html#commenting" target="_blank">100 ideas here</a> to get you thinking. To print, you can copy and paste each picture to a Word document so you can adjust the size to your liking or click the text below the picture you like to download them full size. Plus you can stick them inside sheet protectors and use washable markers to reuse these over and over.<br />I like to draw a few that will help me teach some principles or uncover some information. For example, if I want to know what's the most desired gifts for Christmas are, I'll draw a Christmas tree with empty boxes to fill with their wishes. If I want to encourage thinking of others, I'll draw stems for bouquet of flowers and ask who they would give it to. Paying attention to what my kids draw helps me understand what things they are into, who is important to them, and if I need to work on a habit.<br /><br /><b>Other things you can do in the notebook:</b><br /><ul><li><b>Play the Dot Game-</b> You know the one...there are dots in lines all over the page. One person draws a line then then next, connecting the dots. When one person finishes making a box with a line, he gets to put his initial inside of it. The person with the most boxes wins. Love this game!</li><li><b>Hangman-</b> Just make sure they spell the word correctly!&nbsp;</li><li><b>Story prompts</b>- Instead of drawing unfinished pictures, do a few unfinished stories- start in the middle, beginning, or even end and have them complete it.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Picture Musical Chairs-</b> Start a picture of a monster (or something) but you only get to draw the top- fold it over or cover it up with another piece of paper. Switch papers and the next person gets to draw the body. Keep switching until everyone has a turn. You can divide it up so it goes hat or hair, head, arms and neck, body, legs, then shoes or feet if you need a lot of turns or group them together to make it shorter. Always fun to see the end result! &nbsp;</li></ul><div><i>What other fun things can you do with the notebook?&nbsp;</i></div>Camille Gillhamhttps://plus.google.com/116039207928213722034noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5768813355271441064.post-74221022525854997932014-05-30T07:00:00.000-06:002014-06-13T20:33:39.387-06:00The Ultimate Linky (May 30)<h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: black;">It's my last week to co-host this party! (anyone else sing that phrase?) I love the summer time- relaxed schedules, lazy afternoons, sunshine, its just great. I have tours planned <a href="http://www.costours.com/p/contact-me.html" target="_blank">(email me</a> if you want more info), activities to do- I'm ready. Well, hopefully....Here are some more ideas for this summer to keep you busy in Colorado Springs without going broke and let me tell you some of these are real steals (may contain affiliate links):<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yG6Lhfn8dB8/U4ZSqS1Eg6I/AAAAAAAALac/PpgKj2peUrs/s1600/2014-05-22+14.47.34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yG6Lhfn8dB8/U4ZSqS1Eg6I/AAAAAAAALac/PpgKj2peUrs/s1600/2014-05-22+14.47.34.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div><br />I LOVE bike rides. Riding down the street to the park, finding a new trail- whatever. I have so many great memories of bike rides (and my share of spills). If you are looking for a new trike for your little ones, here's a great sale over at Discount School Supply (click the banner to see the deals).<br /><br /><a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=QrS8n8V9tjI&amp;offerid=306331.223&amp;subid=0&amp;type=4"><img alt="The TRIKE SALE Is Here!! 6 Styles, Each Just $99! Go to the Penny Arcade or just play in the nearby park (its a great one). The best party? Its <b><a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5sy2" target="_blank">only $5</a> </b>as of right now to get 4 tickets there! Totally worth it! I don't know how long the price will stay so low- it will probably go up to half price soon which is still &nbsp;good deal. We used this $5 deal when we went.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nf4ER6FvNOs/U4ZSNLCw0dI/AAAAAAAALaU/f6zyJlVGcX0/s1600/miramontcastle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nf4ER6FvNOs/U4ZSNLCw0dI/AAAAAAAALaU/f6zyJlVGcX0/s1600/miramontcastle.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div><br />Get a little mini-staycation in for only $25 when you stay at the<b> <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5sy3" target="_blank">Inn at Palmer Divide</a></b>. Perfect for a quick weekend trip. Again, this one is a super sale so I don't know how long it will stay this low. Normal price without a deal is $140.<br /><br /><br />Looking for a sport for your child this summer? Try <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5sy5" target="_blank"><b>T-ball with I-9 Sports.</b></a> Right now its only $12.50! This is good for kids 3-6 and focuses on the fundamentals. Can't really beat this deal (again a super sale- Half off Deals seems to be doing a super sale today and I don't know how long it lasts).<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3TeVXew4uVc/U4ZR-HeGJ_I/AAAAAAAALaM/4-f37SWXaBM/s1600/2014-05-17+13.25.26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3TeVXew4uVc/U4ZR-HeGJ_I/AAAAAAAALaM/4-f37SWXaBM/s1600/2014-05-17+13.25.26.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div><br />We just had a fun Pony Party over at <b><a href="https://tracking.groupon.com/r?tsToken=US_AFF_0_201585_221453_0&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.groupon.com%2Fdeals%2Ffairytails-pony-parties%3Futm_source%3DGPN%26utm_medium%3Dafl%26z%3Dskip%26utm_campaign%3D201585" target="_blank">FairyTale Pony Parties</a>.</b> They are super friendly and its lots of fun! It means more walks, more adventures, and more time with my kids. Woohoo! However, it also means the start of fire season as well as floods (and tornadoes). Do you know what to do when a disaster strikes? Are you prepared to leave your house in a moment’s notice? What would you take with you?<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nU7ALBdTfR0/U4iXIBdsE7I/AAAAAAAALd0/1mdl7gVInzE/s1600/disastertourcollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Disaster Preparedness Tour- Are you prepared?" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nU7ALBdTfR0/U4iXIBdsE7I/AAAAAAAALd0/1mdl7gVInzE/s1600/disastertourcollage.jpg" height="160" title="Disaster Preparedness Tour" width="640" /></a></div><br />The amazing folks from <a href="http://www.allstatefoundation.org/saferlives" target="_blank">the Allstate Foundation</a> and <a href="http://www.pointsoflight.org/?gclid=CjkKEQjwqYacBRDO-Mrk6_vr8eQBEiQAWJadfJ4WUM2vMCT_lkOZNyoIXO52xPT9J8z_LdtWQjtAFQPw_wcB" target="_blank">Points of Light</a>, are on a Disaster Preparedness Tour. They kicked off their tour in Colorado Springs May 21st at the Sky Sox Game. Everyone who came to the game had the opportunity to start their own Disaster Preparedness Kit or essentially a one person 72 hour kit. When completed, one person has everything they need to survive in a disaster for at least 72 hours. Jan Epstein, Executive Director at the Allstate Foundation, says the goal of the tour is to educate people since 85% of the population is still not prepared for an emergency. That number has stayed steady for the last few years too. These last 2 summers in Colorado Springs has certainly reminded me to see if my family really is prepared. Is yours? The thing I didn’t realize is how much of a comfort it was to my children to know that we are prepared. Last year when they started to get really worried with the fires coming so close, I showed them our emergency kits and told my kids how they had everything that we would need. We also talked about what things we would want to grab in an emergency. It really boiled down to each other but they also made emergency boxes of their favorite things- things that can't be replaced. Just knowing that they could quickly grab all the most important things eased their nerves a ton! It gives such peace of mind to be prepared.<br />Every 6 months I go throw our emergency preparedness kits and rotate the food and water, double check everything, and change out the batteries to make sure we will always be prepared. My kids enjoy helping because it gives them a sense of being in control in an otherwise uncontrollable situation. <o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">If you missed out on making a kit, get started on one now- build it little by little if you have too- being a little prepared is better than not being prepared at all. If you came to the game that night and started your own- finish it! If you already have enough in your house, stash this one in the car. You never know where you will be when disaster hits. Better to be safe than sorry.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">These next few weeks, I’ll share with you what we keep in the car for disasters as well as for childhood emergencies. Not fun to be caught without one. What do you keep in your car? A family car is really like a second purse. It has everything that you might need in an emergency whether its an actual real life emergency or an emergency in the sight of your child or your sanity. I have things stashed throughout my car for such occasions but today, I'm going to give you a sneak peak into my trunk. I have a mini van like a lot of Moms out there (it secretly has my been my dream car since I was a kid). What I do will work for most SUVs too and I'll show you lucky car people some ideas too.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4pz8dWPky80/U39wOBVB_3I/AAAAAAAALBk/p4v9VpBVF_k/s1600/keepintrunk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="Making the most out of your trunk space" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4pz8dWPky80/U39wOBVB_3I/AAAAAAAALBk/p4v9VpBVF_k/s1600/keepintrunk.jpg" height="320" title="What to Keep in the Car" width="276" /></a></div><br />The most important thing for me in the truck is to not take up anymore space on the floor. I need all that space for groceries, strollers, picnicking, etc. However, I do reserve a small spot for my emergency water. We make every attempt to bring reusable water bottles with us wherever we go but sometimes we forget or we go on a much longer trip than anticipated. Sometimes we just need to refill our bottles and there isn't a drinking fountain in sight. Whenever the big 24 packs of water bottles are on sale, I buy some. I put one in my basement and make sure one is in the car. I also like to include one big bottle (3 liters) to use for refills instead.<br /><a name='more'></a>Everything else I keep in the trunk, however, is off the floor. To do this, you need the right organizer. Krysta Whedon came to my rescue with this great over the back of the chair organizers from Thirty-One. I was lucky enough to host a party with her and earn these for free. If you are looking to host a 31 party <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/Krystas31Ladies/" target="_blank">Krysta is the person to do it with</a>- she is amazing to her hosts and does a great job (you can even do one while in your PJs with Facebook).<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_K8hNnkKWBI/U39wOBD8LjI/AAAAAAAALBY/gDiUN9Ea6AA/s1600/carmodel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="What to keep in the car" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_K8hNnkKWBI/U39wOBD8LjI/AAAAAAAALBY/gDiUN9Ea6AA/s1600/carmodel.jpg" height="320" title="Great ideas for what to keep in your trunk" width="230" /></a></div>I love these organizers that go over the back of the chairs. There are two places to attach them so they won't be swinging around . The top latch is adjustable and you can just attach it around the head rest. The bottom ones are stretchable so I managed to stretch it all around the bottom of the two seat combo with no problems. It stays really well even with my kids climbing over the seats. Where I put the sun screen is actually where you can put a tablet- it has the clear plastic that will work with touch screens. You could easily move these organizers to be right in front of your kids while traveling and you don't have to worry about the tablets getting stepped on.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Here are some of the things I keep in my organizers in the trunk:</span><br /><br /><ul><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P4Rf-bHKRb8/U39wOOQey4I/AAAAAAAALBc/NF_baKxGvQo/s1600/carhanger.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="What's in the Trunk" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P4Rf-bHKRb8/U39wOOQey4I/AAAAAAAALBc/NF_baKxGvQo/s1600/carhanger.jpg" height="317" title="What to Keep in the Car" width="400" /></a><li><b>Sunscreen-</b> At the beginning of the summer, I always forget the sunscreen so I keep a stash in my trunk. I keep a few so those that can put it on themselves can use a bottle while I help the little ones. Right now is the time to stock up on sunscreen too- you can get all kinds of deals and gift cards with sunscreen. With <a href="http://ibotta.com/r/hrfk9g" target="_blank">Ibotta</a> you can even get money back for buying it.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Aloe-</b> We burn super easy and put tons of sun screen on. However, burns happen every now and then. I can easily put aloe on them even before they get back in the car this way and start the healing process.</li><li><b>Baby Wipes</b>- We've been diaper free for about 6 months now but I still carry baby wipes with me everywhere. They clean sticky hands, dirty tables, spilled on car seats, and more.</li><li><b>Hand sanitizer- </b>I give some to my kids each time they get back in the car after one of our adventures. I'd rather not spend the summer sick.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Bubbles</b>- Bubbles can transform a cranky day at the park into a great one. They also good when you have tired kiddos that need a distraction. Once opened though, bubbles can easily leak so I keep them upright here.</li><li><b>Band aids-</b>Stash a whole bunch here- this way you can share.&nbsp;</li><li><b>First Aid Kit-</b> I also have disinfectant, different sizes of bandages, and cotton swabs for those bigger scraps and falls.</li><li><b>Allergy Medicine-</b> My kids are all allergic to grass. However, that doesn't stop them from rolling all around in it. Who can resist that great hill? The last time they came back to the car covered in hives. While some have learned their lesson, I keep it in the car just in case.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Pack of Tissues-</b> I have a whole box up front but the little pack in the back is for the times when it runs out and we still need some. I can also throw it in my purse if we need to.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Spoons-</b> Yep, I have plastic spoons in there. They are be used for a shovel, to share an ice cream cone, eat a fruit cup, or even play the game of spoons. I've discovered the spoons are the most popular utensil that we use on our trips so I make sure to pack some spares.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Pen and Paper-</b> Great to write down reminders, share phone numbers or addresses, or jot down the next great idea. Also good for the bored kid- make a flip book, write a story, challenge them to write thank you notes or kindness letters to somewhere and stick it on them. Also great for when you dropped by someone's house to leave them something and they aren't home- write a quick note and you can leave it behind.&nbsp;</li><li><b>Chapstick-</b> I go crazy when I forget my chapstick. I'll take somewhat melted chapstick over no chapstick at all.</li><li><b>Scissors-</b> Open a new toy at the park, cut open the bag of food, cut off a wrist bracelet from the amusement park- they come in handy more times than you think.</li><li><b>Grocery Bags-</b> Great for trash bags, storing muddy shoes, keeping wet clothes, throwing away dirty diapers, keeping something out of the rain, and more.&nbsp;</li></ul><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O5uvQI3l-Z4/U39xC4sxpwI/AAAAAAAALBw/1kdiTuuwQfI/s1600/carhangers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Organize your Car with Thirty-one" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O5uvQI3l-Z4/U39xC4sxpwI/AAAAAAAALBw/1kdiTuuwQfI/s1600/carhangers.jpg" height="320" title="Car Seat organizers from Thirty-one" width="320" /></a></div>&nbsp;I'm sure I'll keep adding things to this over the years but these are what I've discovered to be the best things to keep in my trunk these 10 years I've been a mom. While you will be giving up some trunk space- its worth it. We did this when we just had our little Civic and didn't regret it.&nbsp;</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div>Since Krysta is so awesome, she is offering all my Colorado Springs Tours readers a special offer: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/Krystas31Ladies/" target="_blank">Contact Krysta </a>and tell her I sent you and you will automatically get FREE shipping and be entered to win a FREE perfect party set if you order before May 25th! Since I'm always on the go with my kiddos during the summer doing all these great tours, I thought I'd sure it with you. Being safe online is so important these days. Its also great when traveling out of the US and you still want to still access internet sites from home (like Netflix and Hulu) since internet sites can be country specific. I wrote all about it on my other blog, so come take a look- it super simple to use and you can download it for free!<a href="http://www.cknscratch.com/saving/2014/5/16/be-safe-with-tunnel-bear" target="_blank"> How to Stay Safe While Using Public Wi-Fi.</a><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--79iAY0PBKY/U3ac8MGXeoI/AAAAAAAAKew/vPT71IVKCNU/s1600/tunnelcircle+(1).png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--79iAY0PBKY/U3ac8MGXeoI/AAAAAAAAKew/vPT71IVKCNU/s1600/tunnelcircle+(1).png" /></a></div>Camille Gillhamhttps://plus.google.com/116039207928213722034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5768813355271441064.post-42318658726448926592014-05-16T07:00:00.000-06:002014-05-16T07:00:03.624-06:00The Ultimate Party (May 16) <h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: black;">Are you ready for another The Ultimate Party on Google+? Go on a Jeep, Segway, or Hot Air Balloon Tour. Its tough to decide which one to do but I think I'd go for the Hot Air Balloon Tour. Which would you choose?<br /><br /><br />Enjoy some coolness over the summer at <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5q0a" target="_blank">Sertich Ice Center</a>. We go every summer on those super hot days. We always go a little crazy at these self service yogurt places so I'm all over deals at these fun places. Right now you can save 38% when you go to <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5q0l" target="_blank">iTopit</a>. The first time we went I think we spent $30 since the kids took off without us! I can hardly believe it since I sent them off to school with coats and mittens this week! With the end of the school year comes the challenge of the summer slide- when all they learned gets forgotten. How do you keep your kids learning all summer long?<br /><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I’m a big fan of what I call edutainment activities- education and entertainment. Kids learn best when they are relaxed and having fun! &nbsp;<i>(This post may contain affiliate links for which I will be compensated)</i><br />Here are <span style="font-size: large;"><b>6 Easy Ways to Keep Learning Fun this Summer</b></span>:&nbsp;</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XiwTeQmKvVA/U3KlIzk13hI/AAAAAAAAKVc/hHoGoTgRt-I/s1600/learningfun.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Learn and Have Fun this Summer" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XiwTeQmKvVA/U3KlIzk13hI/AAAAAAAAKVc/hHoGoTgRt-I/s1600/learningfun.jpg" height="320" title="6 Easy Ways to Keep Learning Fun This Summer" width="253" /></a></div><ul><li><b>Go on a tour-</b>&nbsp;Of course, I'm going to say this one! Tours are a great way to learn about things and it’s neat to see behind the scenes or just new things. We had tons of fun at the<a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/06/space-foundation-discovery-center.html" target="_blank"> Space Foundation</a> last year! <a href="http://www.costours.com/p/alphabetical-list-of-tours.html" target="_blank">Examine this alphabetical list of tours</a> for more ideas. Right now get a deal on tickets to the <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5pzb" target="_blank">Money Museum</a>.</li></ul><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cZYN8BEANwE/U3LPhQv4S4I/AAAAAAAAKWI/1TTzvla3U68/s1600/careandsharetalk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cZYN8BEANwE/U3LPhQv4S4I/AAAAAAAAKWI/1TTzvla3U68/s1600/careandsharetalk.jpg" height="200" width="170" /></a><br /><ul><li><b>Create a theme-</b> Last year we did a superhero month which was so much fun! It was a great excuse to have water fights (got to get the bad guys, right?) but also do some service. We said thanks to those who had served us like the Firefighters. Then we became real superheroes ourselves as we did service for others. Going on <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/07/care-and-share-food-bank-tour.html" target="_blank">a tour of Care and Share Food Bank</a> was really eye opening for my kids. It was good for them to discover all the different ways they can help out.</li></ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HBtyY5ckPxA/U3LVOUCxO1I/AAAAAAAAKWs/4-Zvaq4eCUM/s1600/easysummerlearning.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HBtyY5ckPxA/U3LVOUCxO1I/AAAAAAAAKWs/4-Zvaq4eCUM/s1600/easysummerlearning.jpg" height="219" width="320" /></a></div><ul><li><b>Play Games- </b>It’s really easy to add some learning or review to games. &nbsp;Answer a question correctly before taking a turn, switch the game cards out with flash cards, or make up a new learning game. We loved learning <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/07/where-in-world-with-paper-airplanes.html" target="_blank">geography with our paper airplanes</a> and <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/07/superhero-measuring-with-mazes.html" target="_blank">math with our Super Hero travels.</a>&nbsp;Try some <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5pzf" target="_blank">World Mini Golf</a> and test your knowledge of geometry and geography as you put your way through the course.</li></ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4VQgNqwHHD4/U3LRYKvabPI/AAAAAAAAKWg/G9gaXL5qcs4/s1600/runway.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4VQgNqwHHD4/U3LRYKvabPI/AAAAAAAAKWg/G9gaXL5qcs4/s1600/runway.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div><ul><li><b>Make a Passport-</b> I don’t know what it is about stickers and stamps but when kids have a goal that can be checked off in their booklets or passports, it’s a whole new ballgame. I love the Summer Reading Programs at the library for this reason (Its "Fizz, Boom, Read" this summer at the <a href="http://www.ppld.org/" target="_blank">Pikes Peak District</a>). Last year I introduced our passports with a <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/07/breakfast-runway.html" target="_blank">runway breakfast</a>. Some of the activities we stamped off are pure fun (<a href="http://www.costours.com/2014/05/get-out-for-some-fun-in-colorado-springs.html" target="_blank">like ice skating and ice cream</a>) and others require learning and study. The Passport is also a great place to journal about the summer.&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li><b>See a show-</b> The library has a multitude of fun and educational shows and activities all summer long for free. Or go see a play or even a movie. Afterwards talk about what you saw. Talk about the plot and how the problem was resolved. Hypothesize how magic really works or vote on which critter was the coolest to see. Thinking and talking about what you just saw is a great way to learn.&nbsp;</li></ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LFc77S4ILCI/U3LVY4YfvhI/AAAAAAAAKW0/k5pN5TSozTw/s1600/comicbook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LFc77S4ILCI/U3LVY4YfvhI/AAAAAAAAKW0/k5pN5TSozTw/s1600/comicbook.jpg" height="165" width="200" /></a></div><ul><li><b>Books!</b> The right book can take a child away to a whole new world. Talking about that book together and coming up with new endings is so much fun and they are learning about plots and problem solving. Make your own books- comic book, picture book, chapter book, choose your own adventure book. Then have a special evening where you get to read your books to each other. It’s all kinds of fun! Where would you go?<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vbrQg6_uWLw/U2r-fXeAFuI/AAAAAAAAKBE/-xKzbM9FVQQ/s1600/momtours.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vbrQg6_uWLw/U2r-fXeAFuI/AAAAAAAAKBE/-xKzbM9FVQQ/s1600/momtours.png" height="200" width="198" /></a></div><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Be6JpSk-dXw/U2qWOF7W8DI/AAAAAAAAJ-s/Yap-mntzvI4/s1600/afaindoor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Be6JpSk-dXw/U2qWOF7W8DI/AAAAAAAAJ-s/Yap-mntzvI4/s1600/afaindoor.jpg" height="150" width="200" /></a>&nbsp;1. <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/06/air-force-academy-athletic-facilities.html" target="_blank">The Air Force Academy Athletic Facilities</a>- Probably not the first one that comes to mind but I love this tour. It teaches the values of integrity, hard work, and discipline( and Mom doesn't have to say a word). My kids were thoroughly impressed and worn out by the end- bonus!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G8JT0lEuQzg/U2qeBCKNLtI/AAAAAAAAJ_Q/_qb8lWPfjnU/s1600/foodbankvolunteer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G8JT0lEuQzg/U2qeBCKNLtI/AAAAAAAAJ_Q/_qb8lWPfjnU/s1600/foodbankvolunteer.jpg" height="200" width="161" /></a></div>2. <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/07/care-and-share-food-bank-tour.html" target="_blank">Care and Share Food Bank</a>- I love giving back to the community but I also love to see how my donations are being used. I was amazed at how well Care and Share uses every single thing they receive. It was helpful to see how things work as well so I know the best way to actually help. Being at Care and Share inspired my children too- they wanted to serve more so we went back and donated our time as well. They are excited to go again this summer which warms a mother's heart.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cJxfIqEd5-o/U2qd7pvNHuI/AAAAAAAAJ_I/bK43IIvEN20/s1600/Dionsprincess.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cJxfIqEd5-o/U2qd7pvNHuI/AAAAAAAAJ_I/bK43IIvEN20/s1600/Dionsprincess.jpg" height="200" width="142" /></a></div>&nbsp;3. <a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/06/dions-tour.html" target="_blank">Dion's Pizza Tour-</a> I craved Dion's Pizza while pregnant but they didn't build one until I was done having my babies. When we travel, I have to bring a lot of food with us. One of my daughters can't have too much dairy, another can't have gluten, and I have so many food allergies it is just ridiculous. The smart choice for us is to bring food wherever we go even if it’s just a day trip to the zoo. &nbsp;Plus it saves it money- a definite bonus! Everyone knows one of <b>the best travel saving money tips is to bring your own food</b>. And if you are camping, it’s kind of a must. The hard part is having everything planned and prepared before you go. There was one trip where I completely spaced the food packing all together. I didn't eat all weekend except for a little bit of fruit. &nbsp; Not making that mistake again! I'm so glad to discover Fits Me. &nbsp;Fits Me is an easy online menu planning and recipe search site. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lhWkBFD3XBk/U2KjKVgsREI/AAAAAAAAJwA/BdipasF5L_Y/s1600/easymealplanning.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lhWkBFD3XBk/U2KjKVgsREI/AAAAAAAAJwA/BdipasF5L_Y/s1600/easymealplanning.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div><b><br /></b><b>Here's why I like it:</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fqf1D94DAxw/U2KDF_YfnGI/AAAAAAAAJu8/YoFos7KdmwA/s1600/fitsmeserach.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fqf1D94DAxw/U2KDF_YfnGI/AAAAAAAAJu8/YoFos7KdmwA/s1600/fitsmeserach.png" height="290" width="400" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><b>1. All about the Layout-</b> When it comes to recipes, I need pictures.&nbsp;I don't care if it is called, "The Best Food in the World Period"- if there isn't a picture of it, I'm not going to read the recipe. Fits Me gathers <br /><a name='more'></a>recipes from around the web and shows them with pictures cards in a Pinterest style layout. You can see all kinds of recipes, give them a rating, or add them to a menu plan. As you continue to rate the recipes, it'll learn more of your preferences making it even easier to find things you like.</div><o:p></o:p><br /><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wzKiPjW3xXc/U2KZ7MIIrII/AAAAAAAAJvg/9QT6tWEyyLM/s1600/fitsfoodpersonality.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wzKiPjW3xXc/U2KZ7MIIrII/AAAAAAAAJvg/9QT6tWEyyLM/s1600/fitsfoodpersonality.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><b>2. Allergy and Diet Specific Friendly</b>- There is a Food Personality section that you can customize. On a Paleo diet? Simply check the box and it will only show you Paleo friendly recipes. Have food allergies? Check the boxes and it won't show you that food. Despise coconut? Add it to your dislikes and you won't see a recipe with it. Have a love of chocolate like me? Add it to your likes and see more recipes with it. &nbsp; If you want really simple recipes add it to your preferences. &nbsp;I LOVE the Food Personality feature. It makes all the difference to me. I really don't like sorting through tons of recipes to find just one that works for us. Fits Me makes it super simple. AND if you are having guests over with restrictions or a different diet than you are used to, the Food Personality can make it really easy for you to find something that will make everyone happy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R2r4wVnPkVk/U2KZ7OQrU-I/AAAAAAAAJvc/ODFVsP0TlD0/s1600/fitseggs.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R2r4wVnPkVk/U2KZ7OQrU-I/AAAAAAAAJvc/ODFVsP0TlD0/s1600/fitseggs.png" height="305" width="400" /></a></div><br /><b>3. Searching Made Easy-</b> Only need breakfast recipes that include eggs (thanks to the leftovers from Easter)? Simply add the tags Breakfast and Eggs to your search filter and you'll find all kinds of great ideas like&nbsp;Roasted Asparagus, Green Onion, &amp; Blue Cheese Frittata or&nbsp;Avocado Deviled Eggs. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wgtGfvae7-o/U2KDAbCUG1I/AAAAAAAAJuc/Rk1FspoR86A/s1600/fitsmeplans.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wgtGfvae7-o/U2KDAbCUG1I/AAAAAAAAJuc/Rk1FspoR86A/s1600/fitsmeplans.png" height="306" width="400" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CQpeo3Y_1LI/U2KDDvgMAJI/AAAAAAAAJuo/rdeCf2zUHoY/s1600/fitsmoveto.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CQpeo3Y_1LI/U2KDDvgMAJI/AAAAAAAAJuo/rdeCf2zUHoY/s1600/fitsmoveto.png" height="200" width="182" /></a><b>4. Menu Planning-</b> Once you find a recipe you want to use, add it to your weekly menu. &nbsp;Say you want to add it to Wednesday's Afternoon Snack- just click the Add to Menu button and it'll go where you want it. &nbsp; You can save each menu you plan so if you are going camping and want the same things as last time, you have it saved and ready to go. You can click on your menu plan later and rearrange things around to get the most from your food too. For example if you had chicken on Monday night and another chicken recipe Friday, you can easily move it up in the week to make use of your leftover chicken from Monday.<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UYgkupjSYHg/U2KZuvpw3JI/AAAAAAAAJvU/iOjLEGwO-pY/s1600/fitsshopping.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UYgkupjSYHg/U2KZuvpw3JI/AAAAAAAAJvU/iOjLEGwO-pY/s1600/fitsshopping.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a><b>5. Shopping List-</b> Now this is a great feature. &nbsp;Click on the menus you want (you can even just click on a day at a time) and use the Create Shopping List button. &nbsp; It automatically gathers a list of all the ingredients you need in nicely arranged categories. Now I can easily go back through the list and check off anything that I know I don't need like the spices. Then I email it to myself and always have it with me. I can also easily see if there is a lot of one ingredient that I can just make all at once in the beginning of the week too. For example if I see there is a lot of ground turkey, I’ll make it all the first night I need it so dinner is quicker and easier the next few nights.<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><b>6. &nbsp; Its FREE-</b> Yep, it’s free. <a href="http://fitsmeapp.com/?referral=cmlgill" target="_blank">Simply go here to signup!</a> (this is a referral link). &nbsp; Can't beat free right? They also have great customer service so if you have a problem or even a question they are there for you. I recently asked a question related to popcorn and she gave me great tips in addition to answering my question.<o:p></o:p></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">Fits Me makes it easy to plan meals for while we are away. I simply add things to my menu board, print the grocery list and I’m good to go.&nbsp; For a trip, I don’t check off the things I already have- I print the whole thing and highlight the ones we already have so I know what to pack and what to buy. For instance, I have most of the things listed under spices so I highlight those and go back and combine the spices needed for a meal in a Ziploc and write Taco Seasoning on it to make packing easy.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IHp7Iihw3jY/U2KblRFZPdI/AAAAAAAAJvw/zk3q-yYmaJ4/s1600/togomeal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IHp7Iihw3jY/U2KblRFZPdI/AAAAAAAAJvw/zk3q-yYmaJ4/s1600/togomeal.jpg" height="250" width="400" /></a></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">Fits Me works great for day trips too like when we went to <a href="http://www.costours.com/2014/03/miramont-castle-tour-review.html" target="_blank">Manitou Springs for the day</a>.&nbsp;I can add an easy lunch (like our <a href="http://www.costours.com/2014/03/out-and-about-lunch-idea.html" target="_blank">Cracker Sandwiches</a>) and some great snacks (like our <a href="http://www.costours.com/2014/04/snacks-on-go.html" target="_blank">Granola Bars</a>) to a menu plan. Then I look at the shopping list the day before so I know if I need to hit the grocery store first. <i>&nbsp;</i>I <i>really</i> like being able to save the menu plans and go back and use them over and over again. &nbsp;I can just rotate through a few favorites for our day trips.&nbsp;</div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;"><b>What's one of your go-to meals while on vacation or on an all day outing?</b></div>Camille Gillhamhttps://plus.google.com/116039207928213722034noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5768813355271441064.post-4263400500163594152014-04-29T16:07:00.001-06:002014-04-29T21:21:45.031-06:00More Fun at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region<em style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">FTC Disclosure Statement: This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.&nbsp;</em><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ptBS40mseMA/U2Afe1mPyOI/AAAAAAAAJq4/21VfmvHUaio/s1600/dealweek.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ptBS40mseMA/U2Afe1mPyOI/AAAAAAAAJq4/21VfmvHUaio/s1600/dealweek.png" height="200" width="199" /></a></em></div><br />Do you have animal lovers in your home? I have several. They get so excited whenever they see an animal anywhere we go. &nbsp; However, I am super allergic to all kinds of them so we can't have one. &nbsp;Last year, we did the next best thing: a tour of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. The <a href="https://www.hsppr.org/" target="_blank">Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Regio</a>n also offers<a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5mwf" target="_blank"> great camps for kids</a>!<br />Camp Whiskers and Wags allows kids and critters to become friends. The camp runs 9am- 3pm daily and includes a behind-the scenes tour of the shelter. &nbsp;Kids will also learn respect and compassion for animals as they engage in activities, make crafts, learn from guest speakers in the animal industry, play games, and more. &nbsp;I love that they will also learn some responsible and healthy habits around pets. &nbsp; The kids will interact with lots of different sizes of animals which is great; however, what kind always depends on what they have at the time<br />Currently, Half off Deals is offering the <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5mwf" target="_blank">Whiskers and Wags Camp for half off</a>! &nbsp;Definitely a fantastic deal for such a great 1-week camp. &nbsp;I always have a hard time finding great camps at a great price- so excited to find this one!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kMp5NhMSWFE/U2ASoo3jmBI/AAAAAAAAJqg/2-L0-pig9fo/s1600/humanebldg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kMp5NhMSWFE/U2ASoo3jmBI/AAAAAAAAJqg/2-L0-pig9fo/s1600/humanebldg.jpg" height="273" width="400" /></a></div>And if you missed it, be sure to read<a href="http://www.costours.com/2013/08/humane-society-of-pikes-peak-region-tour.html" target="_blank"> our tour review of the Human Society of the Pikes Peak Region</a>. &nbsp; We went the week after they finished up camp. &nbsp; They still had a lot of their supplies out from the camp and it looked like lots of fun. <br /><br />Half off Deals also has a good deal on a <a href="http://shrsl.com/?~5mwz" target="_blank">Volleyball Camp</a> if you are looking for other options. Its half off again and for 3 days instead of a week. &nbsp; They also have some preschool deals which is kind of amazing!<br /><a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=536601&amp;u=920857&amp;m=50351&amp;urllink=&amp;afftrack=" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="Half Off Deals" border="0" src="http://www.shareasale.com/image/50351/728-90.png" /></a>Camille Gillhamhttps://plus.google.com/116039207928213722034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5768813355271441064.post-10975323624364557512014-04-28T11:05:00.001-06:002014-04-28T11:07:05.441-06:00Like Minecraft? <em style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">FTC Disclosure Statement: This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.&nbsp;</em><br /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Minecraft is the hottest kids game out there, and now, the much anticipated tees are available at<a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?B=597790&amp;U=920857&amp;M=46239&amp;urllink=" target="_blank"> Crazy 8 for just $14.88! </a>These tees are sure to be a favorite and on the top of our kid's summer and travel wardrobe list.
